Eye Opener: Environmental Working Group

When thinking of one product that I use on a daily basis, my Clinique facewash comes to my mind.  I use it at least twice a day and even going a day without this product makes my face breakout!  Without it I would be a giant walking zit!! haha j/k.  But seriously, I cannot live without this facewash!

When going to the Environmental Working Group site and putting in my facewash into the hazard radar, it received a 3.  I was content with this score because a lot of the other products that I use were a lot worse, like my Mary Kay face lotion, it received an 8!  Even though a 3 is not as good as a zero, I still feel that this rating is not as bad as the other products I use that I am considering stop using.

Ingrediants in this product are linked to:

  • Cancer
  • Developmental/reproductive toxicity
  • Violations, restrictions and warnings
  • Other concerns for ingrediants used in this product:

Ingredients from packaging: WATER PURIFIED (AQUA PURIFICATA), POTASSIUM MYRISTATE, GLYCERIN, POTASSIUM BEHENATE, SODIUM METHYL COCOYL TAURATE, POTASSIUM PALMITATE, POTASSIUM LAURATE, POTASSIUM STEARATE, MYRISTIC ACID, BEHENIC ACID, PEG-3 DISTEARATE, PALMITIC ACID, CHOLESTERYL HYDROXYSTEARATE, LAURIC ACID, SODIUM HYALURONATE, STEARIC ACID, ROSEMARY (ROSMARINUS OFFICINALIS), DIMETHYL OCTENOL, LEMON (CITRUS LIMONUM), EUCALYPTUS (EUCALYPTUS GLOBULUS), LAVENDER (LAVANDULA ANGUSTIFOLIA), BUTYLENE GLYCOL, PINE, CARDAMOM (ELETTARIA CARDAMONUM), TRISODIUM EDTA, D&C VIOLET 2 (CI 60730), FD&C RED 4 (CI 614700)

What I learned from this:
I learned that the products that I use may harm the environment and myself by using them.  I have realized that I need to be more earth friendly when it comes to the things that I use on a daily basis.  I have also realized that I can live without certain things, and that my life would not change any by not using these things every day.  Its all about sacrafice and what you can do to make the earth a little bit better every day;)

  3. Haha, Katie first you make me laugh! Hey you got a 3 lucky girl! But that is so funny because I did my post on Mary Kay face lotion! Big Bummer for me and you because it got an 8.... it is true like you stated these are products that we most likely could live without...its hard to think about it but really in all actuality we most like don't need them! I know that my face lotion does cost a little bit so for the what we are currently paying for that face lotion we could prolly find one that would be similar in cost and better for the environment and our faces!:) Great job Katie you post made me laugh

  4. Katie,

A 3 is really good! So good job...don't feel bad! Haha, I doubt you'd be a "walking zit" without this product! But I do understand how important face wash is to people, especially women! It seems like almost everyone in our group did theirs on face wash! Besides I think it's virtually impossible for a product to receive a perfect 0 unless it's made out of dirt, clay, and water lol.

  5. Katie- A walking zit?? haha. Flashback to seventh grade everyone...
I thought that a 3 was a pretty good score as well. However, it is kind of ironic to have a product with a low score, have so many long-winded chemicals listed on the label? ?
Congrats on using a MUCH MORE environmentally friendly product than me, and good luck with the search to find one that is just as effective for you, but less damaging to the environment!
